INDONESIA : MOUNT SEMARU VOLCANO ERUPTION
The death count rises to 34, after Indonesia’s Semeru volcano eruption, the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB) said on Tuesday.
Seventeen were still missing, and almost 3,700 were displaced by the disaster.
Semeru, the tallest mountain on Java island, erupted dramatically on Saturday and spewed thick columns of ash as high as 12,000 meters into the sky. Villages and nearby towns were blanketed by tons of volcanic debris. Nearly 3,000 houses and 38 schools have been damaged by the debris.
The official said the government would provide aid in cash of about $34 for one family within the next six months for renting houses, while the government would look for new locations to build houses for those affected by the disaster.
