The present four districts of Sikkim will be renamed as Gangtok, Gyalshing, Mangan and Namchi –

FIFTH SESSION OF THE TENTH ASSEMBLY OF SIKKIM LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY

Minister Sh. Kunga Nima Lepcha on Tuesday, Dec 07 tabled a bill in the Assembly seeking creation of two new districts – Pakyong and Soreng. The State will now have six districts, as per the bill.

The bill also proposes to rename the existing four districts – East Sikkim, West Sikkim, North Sikkim and South Sikkim – as Gangtok, Gyalshing, Mangan and Namchi respectively.

The proposed new Pakyong district will have its headquarters at Pakyong. Similarly, the proposed new Soreng district will be headquartered at Soreng.

The legislation ‘Sikkim (Re-Organisation of Districts) Bill 2021 is scheduled to be discussed and voted on Wednesday in the Assembly.

The bill will be discussed and voted on tomorrow (Wednesday) in the Assembly.
